AFL Weekly Preview Round 13 2006

AFL Preview Round 13 Season 2006

Last Week: 2 from 8 – Total 62/96 (64.6%)

For all those tipsters who followed the assumed wisdom of the previewer last round I apologise. I have gained some comfort from the fact that at least those who followed my tips last round also joined me with only 2 correct, an all time low record for me. There were some very ordinary form reversals amongst some poor performances by more fancied teams and they all worked towards creating some very interesting tipping scores. Never mind, another 10 rounds to go. If you’re more than 10 points in arrears check your comp rules to see what you have to do to win a booby prize if one is available.

Dogs End Victorian Hoodoo At Subiaco

Dogs Bite Hard On Wavering West Coast

by Tim Stone, reporting for AFANA from Subiaco, WA

The Dogs have staged a stunning defeat of the West Coast Eagles by 9 points in round 13 at Subiaco Oval on Sunday. The hardest road trip in the AFL, along with the fear of a tough contest, was not enough to deter a determined Bulldogs squadron which defied the odds to end a 4 year losing streak at Subiaco for Melbourne based clubs.

The Dogs of Footscray lead for almost the entirety of the game, in doing so managed to fend off a an almost expected strong finishing West Coast outfit.

The oh-so-familiar scenario faced West Coast, the "great escape artists" as they had been dubbed by the media almost came to fruition.

Demons Power Past Plucky Port

by Barry Kennedy, for AFANA, reporting from Melbourne, Australia

The clash between Melbourne and Port loomed as an interesting contest from the outset. Port had put together four straight wins, including getting over the line against the West Coast Eagles last round. The Power's winning form had also earned them an unlikely place in the Eight, based on its early season from. For its part Melbourne had strung together two months of top-class football via a heady mix of skillful and tough football. The biggest point of interest in this game however was clearly a red hot Byron Pickett lining up against his former employer. Port played 37 games at the MCG since Pickett took a Norm Smith medal while playing for Port in the 2004 grand final.

Free Agency In CBA Mix

Players Push on CBA

The AFLPA met with a number of players' agents last week to discuss issues for the next Collective Bargaining Agreement which is currently being negotiated between the Association and the AFL. One issue on the agenda is a form of limited free agency.   At the time it was signed, the current CBA was hailed as bringing substantial improvement to player wages and benefits, but now is considered to be weak and Gale said players will fight harder this time for what they want and not accept what the AFL believes to be appropriate.

One item which the AFLPA will discuss - again - is a limited form

Game Speed Concerns Coaches

by Lisa Albergo, reporting for AFANA

Injury Debate Rages On

In the lead up to their game this weekend, Collingwood Coach Mick Malthouse and Sydney Coach Paul Roos held a joint press conference at which they both expressed their concerns about the speed of the game causing more injuries this year. Both echoed the sentiments of Carlton Coach Denis Pagan and Brisbane's Leigh Matthews that the new rule changes could be the cause - especially the new kickin rule.  Pagan urged the AFL to look at why more players were now being injured, while Matthews questioned the new kick-in rule, believing that the increased speed of the game had left players more susceptible to injury.   Both Malthouse and Roos are concerned that the increased speed of the game is causing players to become fatigued, resulting in injuries.

Cats Sharpen Claws on Dockers

Cats Win At Crosswords In Season

by Tim Stone, reporting for AFANA from Subiaco, WA

Fremantle has continued their wayward--and losing--way with an emphatic 66 point hiding at the hands of Geelong on sunny Subiaco Oval on Saturday.   The game presented two teams at  crossroads in their seasons--polar opposites in the positions they find themselves  going into the split round break of the 2006 AFL premiership  season.

AFL Doctors Injury Study

Doctors Want A Say

The AFL Medical Officers Association has formed a committee to study serious neck and head injuries and how they occur, then make recommendations to the league if there are options for rule changes to better protect players from such serious injury.  The committee - comprised of Geelong doctor Hugh Seward, , St Kilda's Ian Stone,  Melbourne's Andrew Daff, and Peter Larkins - will base their study on the parameters used to study knee injuries to ruckmen, which led to the new ruck rules introduced several years ago.

Seward was quoted in the Melbourne Age, "There's been a lot of conjecture about what might improve, protect the players more effectively and we believe that if any rule change has to be considered,
