Grand Final Coverage and ITVN
|
This
week AFANA received further details on the Grand Final coverage to be
provided by Setanta Sports and MHz. We were told that Setanta
plans
on
carrying "...every second that is available [to] be shown,
from the pre-match to the extended half-time to the full awards ceremony."
This means that whatever is available to them, whether it is
3.5
hours or the 5 hours we saw in the early part of the decade they will
air it. Unlike the past few seasons on Fox Sports this means
we
should see all of the pre-game festivities. Coverage of the
AFL
highlights will continue Fridays at 5 PM EDT right up to the Grand
Final. We are awaiting clarification of the plans of Fox
Sports
World Canada but we fully expect them to also carry the coverage live.
At this time, MHz is expected to air the Grand Final in
condensed
form on tape delay but will show 3 hrs of coverage and repeat it a few
days later. We now have full MHz schedules for the balance of
the
season.
For fans who want Setanta Sports but don't have DirecTV now there is an
alternative (provided you have a high speed Internet
connection).
The Internet television provide ITVN is offering Setanta
Sports.
You have to get their box and hook it up between your
Internet
router and your TV but it provides the same feed as on DirecTV.
The cost is also about the same, $14.95 per month.
For more
info, see the ITVN web site: http://www.itvn.com/tour/04/index.html
. Thanks to reader CF and Setanta Sports for
bringing this to our attention.
The schedule on Fox Sports World
Canada became a bit clearer this week as we received schedules thru the
second week of September. Hopefully the uncertainty that has
plagued us throughout August is now over.
News from Australia this week included reassurance that Radio Australia
will continue to have shortwave coverage of Aussie rules past this
season: http://www.afana.com/drupal/node/202
and reports on the demise of the 24 footy coverage in Australia, the
Fox Footy Channel: http://www.afana.com/drupal/node/211
. Read our online reports for more on these developments.
AFANA has begun accepting Grand Final party announcements.
If you
are a party organizer, planner, or social honcho for a club or
association, contact us about how to get on our special mailing list
for party organizers. See the info in the minor News Items
section of this
newsletter. The party listings
are in this newsletter
below this section.
Call for Help
With the changes in TV coverage and some internal reorganization, AFANA
is expanding and needs more volunteers. You, dear reader, can
help. Most of these tasks don't require extensive time
commitments and unless noted otherwise, don't
require knowledge of html or web skills or even prior experience.
Want to help footy grow? Then please volunteer!
Our
needs:
US
based contributors
to our web site. Help us process the increasing number of
sources of info we get so we can get it out to fans.
Marketing help. If you have
experience in marketing, advertising, etc. we can use you.
Video and graphic production assistance.
If you have experience producing video stills, or
short
video pieces, we need you.
Australian based reporters
in Melbourne, Adelaide, and
Brisbane. Learn to be a professional journalist and get AFL
press
credentials. Perfect for students. No experience
needed.
(Tell your friends down under!)
Contact Rob if you are interested by replying to this newsletter
(please do not quote the entire newsletter!).
A reminder:
For Setanta,
this is a "trial" season of live coverage. If they net enough
additional subscribers as a result of adding footy to justify the cost,
then coverage may continue in future seasons and may even expand.
For info on Setanta see:
http://www.setanta.com/content/setanta/na/cms.nsf
Therefore it is extremely important for
fans to support this effort if at all possible. Let Setanta
know if you
like the coverage and if you subscribe, let them that you subscribed because
of the footy. If you learned of the coverage from
AFANA, please tell them that, too!
Setanta
Sports is asking for feedback on the
live
games at
sschannel@setanta.com.
You can also e-mail AFANA and we will share your responses
with Setanta (anonymously if you so request). Please copy us
on comments you make to Setanta
so we can consider them as well.
If you can't get the coverage, then let them know you would
subscribe if it were available to you. Setanta Sports is
available in many Irish or soccer pubs so you might check out your
local one to see if they will screen the matches for you. The
Setanta Sports Venue Finder is at:
http://www.setanta.com/portal/systemcontent/page?
open&systemtitle=nappvvenuefinderb
As always, fan feedback is welcome at AFANA. |

O'Toole's in downtown Chicago, on the corner of Ontario and Fairbanks,

is a $2.00 at the door to cover cost of the security person
required by the bar for their large party room which we
have acquired again this year. There is limited
parking across the street or a larger parking lot one block south on
Ohio Street. There is also a Holiday Inn (Ohio and Fairbanks) (312
787-6100) across the street if you don't want to drive home in the wee
hours. Get there on public transport (CTA travel information:
312-836-7000): Directions: Red Line, Brown Line, or Blue Line CTA train
to Chicago Ave. Transfer to eastbound Chicago Ave (#66) bus
and take that to the corner of Ontario and Fairbanks

Fairbanks (about 8 blocks). Or Sheridan Road bus (#151) to
Michigan and Erie or Ohio and walk two blocks east to
Fairbanks. Ontario is one block south of Erie, one block
north of Ohio. The festivities will start at 10:00
PM. Food and drink throughout the evening. Your hosts are

Tooele (Salt Lake City), UT
Tiffny and Mark Kaleta along with the Salt Lake Seagulls AFC will host
their sixth AFL Grand Final party. Tooele is a 30 minute
drive
southwest from downtown Salt Lake City at exit 99 on I-80. We
will be showing the game on 2 televisions screens, in 2 rooms.
A
fun night is guaranteed, with the usual Aussie party
food.
This is a family friendly night out. There will be
soda’s,
snacks (light meal) and beer, however if you want to add to
the
party, please bring a plate or some refreshments of some kind.
Festivities start at around 8:30 PM with the Aussie Footy
Lesson
at 9:30 PM and there is no charge. Last year we crammed 60
people
into our house and we had a great night. Yes, Tooele is a little bit of
a drive, but who said the party was over once the game was
finished? Call Mark for directions and an introduction,
remember
this is not a private club or bar, it is a private house. Mark will
send directions at that point. For more info call (business
hours) 801-297-6890, (Cell) 435-840-0961, or (home) 435-843-0952 or
e-mail at mkaleta@utah.gov
or saltlakeseagullsafc@yahoo.com
. Important note: Due to personal considerations,
all
attendees should reconfirm the party a few days prior to the event.
