West Coast says midfielder Daniel Kerr will take the field in Saturday's Grand Final against Sydney, even though he failed to complete the team's final training run at the MCG on Friday afternoon. Kerr spent most of the light training session away from the main group, kicking the football at one stage, but left the track halfway through the session. Defender David Wirrpanda, who also trained away from the main group, appeared to easily pass a fitness test on his troublesome hamstring and was almost to certain to play as well.
Opals To Be Honoured at GF
Australia's win at the recent women's basketball world championships in Brazil will be formally recognised at Saturday's AFL Grand Final. AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou said on Friday four players from the Australian team, known as the Opals, would be part of the pre-match motorcade around the MCG, joining the Hall of Fame inductees and recent retirees. The Opals won their first world title by beating Russia 91-74 in the final at Sao Paulo last Sunday. The US finished third.
Interstate Finals Good for Footy: PM
Australian Prime Minister John Howard has tipped his home team, the Sydney Swans, to win its second AFL premiership in a row, and the Melbourne Storm to beat the Brisbane Broncos in the National Rugby League Grand Final on Sunday night.
Howard said it was "absolutely great" for both footy codes that home teams will be absent from this weekend's grand finals, despite laments from Melbourne and Sydney fans. "I know that's not a popular thing to say in Melbourne and it's probably not a popular thing to say in parts of Sydney either, but if you look at the vision splendid of Australianising ... all codes of football then I think you've got to say hallelujah to what's happened," Howard was quoted as speaking on Southern Cross Radio on Friday morning. "But I can understand particularly Victorians wanting the hallelujah chorus to end soon." Howard also said he had concerns the weekend's footy finals could be terrorist targets but there was no evidence any terrorist attack could occur.
