Trades, Delistings, & Re-Signings
The trading period was conducted from Monday October 9 through October 13 with several big names not unexpectedly finding themselves at new clubs. The biggest names were, of course, Jason Akermanis, Peter Everitt, and Michael Gardiner. Both Akermanis and Everitt got their wish as the Bulldogs (Akermanis) and Sydney (Everitt) successfully negotiated with Brisbane and Hawthorn to obtain the disgruntled duo. And Gardiner has traded in his Eagle wings for a halo as he joins the Saints.
Full trade details:
WESTERN BULLDOGS: traded Shane Birss to St Kilda for its Round Four selection (number 59).
WEST COAST: traded Andrew McDougall, its Round Two Selection (number 34) and its Round Four selection (number 66) to the Western Bulldogs for its Round Two selection (number 29) and its Round Four on-traded selection (number 59); traded Michael Gardiner and its Round Four on-traded selection (number 59) to St Kilda for its Round Three selection (number 43)..
BRISBANE: traded Jason Akermanis to the Western Bulldogs for its Round Two on-traded selection (number 34).
FREMANTLE: traded Graham Polak, its Round One selection (number 13) and its Round Four Selection (number 63) to Richmond for its Round One selection (number eight) and its Round Three selection (number 42).
COLLINGWOOD: traded Chris Tarrant to Fremantle for Paul Medhurst and its Round One on-traded selection (number eight); traded its Round Four selection (number 60) to Richmond for its Round Four on-traded Selection (number 63).
HAWTHORN: traded Peter Everitt to Sydney for its Round Two selection (number 33).
ESSENDON: traded Dean Solomon and its Round Four selection (number 52) to Fremantle for its Round Three on-traded selection (Round 42) and Round Three selection (Round 47).
Trade Notes
Adelaide, Carlton, the Kangaroos, and Port Adelaide did not participate in the trading,
Carlton's Bret Thornton informed the club prior to trade week that he wanted to be traded and Hawthorn was keenly interested and offered two draft selections. However, Carlton refused, saying Thornton was a required player and managed to persuade him to remain a Blue.
Chris Tarrant, who had a number of off field indiscretions at Collingwood, has vowed to clean up his act and believes he and Matthew Pavlich can form a successful partnership at Subiaco. Coach Chris Connolly believes Tarrant will provide the much needed support to Pavlich in the Docker forward line.
For the first time in history a traded draft selection was returned to its original club with the Saints regaining selection #59. The Saints had given up the selection in exchange for Shane Birss from the Western Bulldogs. The Dogs then off-loaded the selection to the Eagles as part of the deal to secure forward Andrew McDougall. The Eagles then returned the selection to St. Kilda along with Michael Gardiner in exchange for the Saints' third round selection (number 43).
Re-Signed
Jason Johnson for two years with Essendon, Antoni Grover (three years) & Scott Thornton (two years) with Fremantle, Brent Guerra (three years) with Hawthorn; Jordan Russell, Simon Wiggins, Luke Blackwell, and Bret Thornton with Carlton; Brett Ratten has been appointed an assistant coach at Carlton as well.
Delisted
Melbourne has delisted Phillip Read, Shannon Motlop, and Nick Smith.
The Kangaroos have delisted Troy Makepeace (163 games) and Chad Jones (six games), who join Cameron Thurley, Mark Powell, rookie Justin Perkins and retirees Sav Rocca and Jade Rawlings in departing the club.
With its focus on developing younger players and the need to accommodate Trent Hentschel and Rhett Biglands on the long term injury list next season, Adelaide decided to delist stalwart Ben Hart. The club was also concerned about Hart's durability as the 32 year old managed only 11 games this past season due to a succession of injuries. Hart, who became the first Crow to reach 300 games, missed Adelaide's finals campaign due to an achilles injury.
Port Adelaide delisted Matthew Bishop, James Ezard, and Elijah Ware. Bishop, 31, played 18 games for Melbourne before crossing to Port in 1999 and played 132 games with the Power, including the 2004 premiership. Ezard and Ware both had two seasons at the club and made their AFL debuts in 2006, playing four and two games respectively.
Hawthorn has delisted Matthew Ball, Luke Brennan, Nick Ries, Ben Kane, Harry Miller, and Josh Thurgood. Kane,23, has been on the rookie list for two years and is now too old to be retained on the rookie list under AFL rules, and the club decided not to elevate him. Of the six players, Ries is by far the most experienced with 84 games in the past five years. He played only nine games in 2006. The other five have played less than 25 games each but could be redrafted onto the club's rookie list in December. All six will be allowed to train with the club until the draft to give them a chance to be selected by another club. Ben McGlynn and Stephen Gilham, who both played four senior games this year as replacements for injured players, have been elevated from the rookie list to the seniors.
