The AFL concluded its annual exam of each club's Total Player Payment (TPP) estimates for the 2007 season ahead of the preseason draft and gave the nod to eight clubs to participate in the draft: Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon, Hawthorn, Kangaroos, Port Adelaide, Richmond, and St Kilda.

Adelaide, the Brisbane Lions, Fremantle, Geelong, Melbourne, Sydney, West Coast and the Western Bulldogs each submitted a full Primary List of 38 Players. The selections allocated to each of the eight clubs was as follows:

Round One: Carlton, Essendon, Kangaroos, Port Adelaide, Hawthorn, Richmond, St. Kilda, Collingwood

PRESEASON DRAFT

1. CARLTON - Cain Ackland (from St Kilda)
Originally drafted by Port Adelaide in 1999, but managed only a dozen games in four seasons with the Power before being traded to St. Kilda at the end of 2004. Played all 22 games for the Saints in 2005 and 19 games in 2006. Should do well with the Blues who lost three ruckmen at the end of 2006 - Barnaby French and Adrian Deluca (retired) and Chris Bryan (traded to Collingwood).

2. ESSENDON - Mal Michael (from Brisbane Lions)
Well-documented case of player changing his mind about retirement. Began his career on Collingwood's rookie list and was elevated to the seniors in 1997. Played 63 games with the Pies before being traded to Brisbane at the end of 2000. Played 140 games for Brisbane including all three premierships 2001-2003).

3. KANGAROOS - Ben Ross (from Gippsland Power), 18, 176 cm (5'8"), 75 kg (165 lb)
Speedy midfielder, strong in the air, represented Vic Country in U-18s.

4. PORT ADELAIDE - Adam Cockshell (from Norwood), 20, 199 cm (6'5"), 100 kg (220 lb)
Center half forward, strong mark, good mobility for his size.

5. HAWTHORN - Josh Thurgood (Hawthorn), 21, 190 cm (6'2"), 77 kg (169)
Rookie listed in 2004 by the Hawks, he impressed at VFL level and earned senior listing in 2005. A fierce competitor in defense, he played nine senior games in 2005, but managed just two more in 2006. Gets a second chance but still needs to build up his slight frame.

6. RICHMOND - Kent Kingsley (from Geelong)
Began his career with 12 games for the Kangaroos 1999-2000 before being traded to the Cats. Leading goalkicker in four consecutive seasons with the Cats (2002-05), but managed just nine games in 2006 as he struggled with form and injury.

7. ST KILDA - Matthew Clarke (from Adelaide)
Journeyman veteran ruckman who actually started life as a Tiger way back in 1990, but never played a senior game and was traded to Brisbane in 1992, Debuted with the Lions in 1993 and played 130 games before heading to Adelaide at the end of 1999. Played 118 games with the Crows.

8. COLLINGWOOD - Chris Bryan (from Carlton)
Drafted by the Blues in 2004, the goal-kicking mobile Bryan managed just 10 senior games in two seasons before seeking better opportunities elsewhere.

9. CARLTON - Cameron Cloke (from Collingwood)
Debuted with the Pies in 2004 after spending all of 2003 in the VFL but after a promising start missed the last nine games with a shoulder injury. Played 12 games in 2005 but again succumbed to a shoulder injury late in the year. Managed just two more games in 2006 for a total of 21 senior appearances. a strong marking ruckman/forward.

Scans revealed a minor vertebrae fracture and he will require a neck brace until the end of January and will not participate in competitive training until late February or early March.

A bout of glandular fever and an ankle injury restricted him to just 3 games in 2004 and he managed only one game in 2005 due to injury. He fared better in 2006 with 11 senior games, but rebuilding seems to be a priority over sentimentality after the Bombers' dismal 2006.
