Charges Laid:
Dustin Fletcher (ESS), striking Geelong's Kane Tenace: assessed as reckless conduct (two points), medium impact (two points) and high contact (two points), equaling six points, a Level Three offense, 225 demerits and a two game suspension. He has an existing poor record one of one match suspended within the last three years, increasing the penalty 10% to 247.50 demerits and a two game suspension. He accepted, reducing the penalty 25% to 185.63 demerits and a one game suspension.
Mark McVeigh (ESS), striking Geelong's Gary Ablett: assessed as intentional conduct (three points), low impact (one point) and high contact (two points),.equaling six points, a Level Two offense, 225 demerits and a two game suspension. He has an existing poor record of one match suspended within the last three years, increasing the penalty 10% to 247.50 demerits and two game suspension. Had he accepted, the penalty would have been reduced 25% to 185.63 demerits and a one game suspension with 85.63 demerits held over toward his future record, meaning any further offense would have resulted in another suspension with future demerits added to the 85.83.
McVeigh decided to challenge part of the charge and, with some help from Gary Ablett, had the classification reduced from high contact to low. He was still entitled to the discount as he did plead guilty to striking. Ablett admitted that the pair had been pushing and shoving each other off the ball, but told the hearing he did not recall whether McVeigh used his open hand or fist. He also stated that contact was to his chest area rather than his neck and admitted to playing up a bit for the umpire to win a free kick. The panel agreed which reduced the total demerits from 185.63 to 103.12. Although McVeigh will still serve a one game suspension, he will now carry only 3.12 demerits against his future record. The reduction gives him more leeway should he offend again.
Daniel Kerr (WCE), striking Brisbane's Will Hamill: assessed as reckless conduct (two points), low impact (one point) and high contact (two points), equaling five points, a Level Two offense, 125 demerits and a one game suspension. He has an existing poor record of three matches suspended within the last three years, increasing the penalty 30% to 162.50 demerits. He also has 33.20 demerits held over from within the last 12 months, further increasing the penalty to 195.70 demerits. He accepted, reducing the penalty 25% to 146.78 points, still a one game suspension.
