Essendon and young gun Bachar Houli are working out a plan which allow Houli to train and still fulfill his religious obligations. Houli, a devout Muslim, began a month long fast last week for the holy month of Ramadan.
Since Ramadan coincides with AFL finals, the club wants to ensure Houli can do both come next September should the Bombers make the finals. According to Houli, weights and gym work won't be too much of a problem, but the running and sprint work could be. The club has already begun studying methods used by overseas soccer teams during Ramadan. Houli says he greatly appreciates the respect the club has given his religion and his beliefs. Due his prayer commitments in the mornings, Houli is also allowed by the club to train at night.
While the club and his teammates have come to understand more about Islam, Houli said some of his family members have been subjected to racial and religious abuse. He himself was also the victim of taunts from supporters. Houli says patience is the only way to deal with such intolerance.
