Well-respected sports commentator Clinton Grybas was found dead in his apartment on Saturday, January 5. Colleagues, some of whom had seen him the night before at a barbeque, became concerned when the meticulous Grybas failed to come to work for his Saturday afternoon program. After he failed to answer his telephone, apartment building staff were notified and let themselves into his apartment where they found Grybas. He was rushed to the hospital but it was too late. It is believed that Grybas, who reportedly had a sleepwalking condition, may have fallen and hit his head. Friends and family recalled several incidents in which Grybas said he found himself on his 15th floor balcony after sleepwalking. In another incident, Grybas hit his head but thought he had been the victim of an intruder.
Tributes poured in from the AFL clubs and others with all saying that Clinton was a true professional and a gentleman. Grybas worked for both Fox Sports and 3AW Radio. As well as football, he also covered basketball, tennis, horse racing, soccer, the Olympics twice, the Commonwealth Games, and bike and car races. He was named the AFL's Radio Broadcaster of the Year 2005, won the Cricket Victoria Media Award and was often named a favorite caller by in fan surveys.
Grybas began with ABC Radio in 1995,then moved to 3AW in 2001. He also was a commentator for Foxtel. According to an internet profile, Grybas said his favorite moment in sports calling was when the women's water polo team won during the Sydney Olympics.
