The season is barely one week old and already several players are going to be sidelined for a number of weeks. The following players have been placed on the long-term injury list of their respective clubs:
ESSENDON: Scott Gumbleton (back), Brent Prismall (knee)
PORT ADELAIDE: Cameron Hitchcock (shoulder)
MELBOURNE: Jake Spencer (knee), Max Gawn (knee, season). Gawn injured his knee during a training session in mid-December. Initially, it appeared to be minor cartilage damage but surgeons discovered damage to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) as well.
The clubs have the option of promoting a rookie to the senior list to replace the injured players who must remain on the long-term injury list for a minimum of 6-8 weeks regardless of their recovery progress.
