Reigning Premiers, the Geelong Cats, traveled to Perth to do battle with the Cinderella team of the AFL, the Fremantle Dockers. With full forward Cameron Mooney suspended and ruckman Brad Ottens injured, the loss of the two biggest Cats gave 28 year-old James Podsiadly the chance to make his debut. Fremantle had won their first two games of the season and on their home turf were tipped to take the game right up to the Cats.

Port Adelaide Power traveled west in Round 19 after a crushing win over the Hawks last weekend. With their confidence high, they needed to win this game against the lowly ranked Fremantle Dockers to cement their place in the Final Eight. When the nation's two port side teams meet sparks are expected and a tough encounter is the order of the day.

Big name cuts to both teams for disciplinary breaches and poor form saw the Fremantle Dockers and the Carlton Blues face off with new look sides and plenty of youth on display. Carlton wore a new away strip, a yellow jumper signed by Lance Armstrong, each one to be sold at auction post-match as a fundraiser for cancer research. Both teams had looked brittle in previous matches and Carlton in particular were out to show the football public that they were serious contenders for the Finals. The umpire was keen to get the ball bounced at the start of the game with players already involved in shoving and niggling that could have resulted in an all-in brawl had it gone on any longer.
