Delistings and Retirements Part 2

Goddard in action

Clubs which didn't make the post season have begun the process of releasing players they don't feel they need next season and opening spots on the roster for draftees. This is known as delisting. This is the second article in a series.

Essendon informed Brendon Goddard he would not be offered a new contract. Goddard, 33, was shocked at the decision while Coach John Worsfold admitted that it was a very tough call to make. An emotional Goddard, who has played every game this season, informed teammates ahead of the final game of the year.

2017 Rookie Draft

by Lisa Albergo reporting for AFANA from Chicago

Just days after the national draft, the AFL held the rookie draft. It would also have the time for the preseaon draft, but all 18 clubs notified the league that they were not going to participate in the preseaon draft so there was none. Just as the draft, again it is club club with the selection number followed by the player's name, (club of origin), height, weight, position and a brief about the player. Some players have no selection number ahead of their names. Those players were prenominated by the clubs as Category B and/or Next Generation Academy nominations. The NGA is another program for junior players to progress and train, with the clubs aiming to draft those players. Clubs selecting Category B (international or unregistered) or NGA rookies do not have to use a selection on those players.

More List Changes

by Lisa Albergo reprotinf for AFANA from Chicago

The Magpies have made list changes ahead of the draft. Defender Ben Sinclair, 26, has retired after just 63 games for health reasons. He suffered several concussions in 2016 and a serious hamstring injury in a 2017 preseason game ended his year before it began. Fellow defenders Adam Oxley and Jackson Ramsay have been delisted, but the club is committed to redrafting Oxley to their rookie list. Oxley has played 31 games for the Pies since 2012 while Ramsey, 22, has managed just 17 games in in five years due to injuries. Shin issues ended his 2015 season early while a knee reconstruction cut 2016 short.

Crows Crush Kangaroos

Brook “Boris” Kilpatrick reporting from Adelaide Oval for AFANA

A slick Adelaide Crows unit has sent North Melbourne packing for season 2016 with a dominant second half blitz at Adelaide Oval on Saturday night. Livewire Crows forward Eddie Betts stole the show kicking six goals to snuff out any chance of a North Melbourne challenge, a result in keeping with two teams at the opposite end of the form line.

Kangaroos Celebrate Harvey Milestone in Style

Brook “Boris” Kilpatrick reporting for AFANA

In a scrappy contest in front of just over 40,000 fans at Etihad Stadium on Saturday night, North Melbourne helped to celebrate Brent Harvey’s games record with a 23 point victory over St Kilda. Boomer Harvey is chaired off the field by Michale Firrito and Drew Petrie in Aussie rules match. Photo by Kim Densham for AFANA.Harvey’s 427th VFL/AFL game broke the record held by Hawthorn’s Michael Tuck, and with seemingly plenty left in the tank it would take a brave man to suggest he cannot reach the amazing milestone of 450 league games if he decides to play on next season.

Roo Resurgence Eliminates Bombers

Janet Linn reporting for AFANA from Melbourne, Victoria

In a no holds barred Second Elimination Final in front of 78559 fans, Essendon lined up against North Melbourne for the right to advance further into the Finals series. The Bombers had much to prove after two tumultuous seasons marred by the ASADA investigation into the use of prohibited substances at the club in 2012. Banned from the 2013 Finals series as a result, finally they had a chance to play on the big stage and give their fans something to celebrate. For North Melbourne it was “make or break’ type pressure hanging over their heads with the absence of team “barometer” Brent (Boomer) Harvey (through suspension) a definite disadvantage.

Crows Find Form

Jamie Kloeden reporting for AFANA from Adelaide Oval, Australia

Adelaide players have referred to their season thus far as "a roller coaster" with the last five rounds alternating between wins and losses. Players have stated publicly that their aim is to find some consistency and start stringing the wins together or risk playing themselves out of Finals' contention. North Melbourne on the other hand is currently in the Top Eight but is a team still fighting for consistency as players try to live up to big preseason expectations.

Crows Steal Victory In Thriller

Jamie Kloeden reporting for AFANA from Adelaide, Australia

After a heart breaking after the siren loss to the West Coast Eagles last round, the North Melbourne Kangaroos were hoping that a home game, back under the roof at Etihad Stadium, against the traveling Adelaide Crows might be enough to get the confidence back up for a push towards the Top Eight. An indifferent start to the season had the Crows in a very similar position on the Ladder so many of the experts predicted a tight tussle with much on the line for both sides. And a tight tussle was certainly what played out with many touting this contest as the game of the season thus far.

Eagles Get Jump On Kangaroos

Perth has been in the grip of a never-ending summer. On a day that should have been pleasantly autumnal, the North Melbourne Kangaroos arrived to face 97 degree heat and a parochial crowd of nearly 36,000. To make matters worse, the Kangaroos' premier ruckman Goldstein came down with a stomach virus before the game leaving the lion’s share of the work up to first gamer Cameron Pederson.
