Former Adelaide star Simon Goodwin, who has been an assistant coach with Essendon, was rumored to be a candidate to replace sacked Adelaide coach Brenton Sanderson.
However Goodwin has quashed that speculation with the announcement that he has signed on to be Paul Roos' successor at Melbourne. The Demons have signed Goodwin to a five year contract. He will serve as an assistant coach under Roos until the end of 2016 when he will take over the senior coaching position.
Goodwin said that while it would have been nice to return to Adelaide, the culture of success being built at Melbourne was appealing and he wants to become a part of that. The feeling was apparently mutual with Roos and the Demons saying Goodwin was their preferred candidate during their two year search for Roos' successor. The club reportedly sounded out 20 different candidates.
