AFL Weekly Review Round 12 Part II 2007

AFL Round 12 Part 2

by Tim Murphy

Ah, the bye week. Good luck tipping next week.

At the MCG:

Richmond   6.3   12.8   14.12   18.16.124
Melbourne  2.2    2.4    8.6     11.9.75

Huzzah! The Tiges broke their duck at last, belting an insipid Melbun in the first half and then doing enough after the long break to stay comfortably ahead. With Nathan Brown back and (hopefully) soreness-free,

Saints Over Eagles In Historic Upset

Scott Lockhart reporting for AFANA from Subiaco Oval, Perth.

St. Kilda has caused one of the upsets of the season after defeating West Coast by 23 points at Subiaco Oval on Sunday. In an epic contest of swinging fortunes it was a seven goal third term that gave the Saints the crucial edge in a tightly fought finish. In a match where their season was hinging, the Saints were lead strongly by 350 game celebrant Robert Harvey, who collected 30 possessions in his milestone,  and a brilliant four goal first half performance from Justin Koschitzke. The loss is the Eagles fourth in six weeks and now leaves them sitting in third position on the ladder.

Melbourne radio station 3AW has axed four members of its sports team after suffering a plunge in the latest ratings survey of AFL radio coverage.  3AW Executive Producer of Sport Ralph Horowitz and journalist Craig Hutchison (who presented the pre-match program on Saturday and Sunday afternoons and called the Saturday night game) were given their marching orders last week, as were Trevor Marmalade and John Rothfield (aka Dr Turf), co-presenters of Saturday morning sports/variety show Glossing Over, which was also dropped. Hutchison and Marmalade are colleagues at Channel Nine Melbourne.

AFL Weekly Review Round 12 Part 1 2007

AFL Round 12 Part 1

by Tim Murphy

At Docklands:

Carlton   4.2    6.5    9.6     12.8.80
Hawthorn  6.4   13.6   18.13   27.18.180

Last week prominent Horforn director Jason Dunstall reckoned finals were “some way off” for the Hawks. They’ll be in ‘em this year. Eight wins from twelve, a healthy percentage, wins against the other top four teams, the Orcs’ll be there in September. The final piece of evidence was this club-record smashing of the Bluies, a bit of a surprise as most expected a close game. But the Bluesers were slaughtered in contested-ball wins and fell apart rapidly as the game progressed. Very disappointing following their last two wins and the big crowd of their supporters who’d turned out. The Carton side coming in wasn’t altered from the one which defeated Pordadelaide, the Hawks seemed crucially weakened by the late withdrawal of Lance Franklin with a calf strain, Xavier Ellis replaced him. Luke Hodge played his 100th game and it was also his 23rd birthday.
