AFL Weekly Review Round 20 2006

AFL Round 20

At Football Park:

Port Adelaide  3.4    9.6    12.8    12.15.87

Collingwood    6.5   10.10   10.13   12.17.89

Exciting game, Pie Alan Didak slotting a major with 20 seconds to go to put Collywood ahead. Thus the Poise confirmed finals participation, missing out was a mathematical if not realistic possibility going in. Beforehand Power coach Mark Williams had claimed indifference to the result, even breaking a taboo by suggesting a loss would be preferable from a draft perspective. Typical ‘Choco’ bullpoo, the depleted Pooer tried hard. Flower fans will wonder about a last-quarter Danyle Pearce shot which the goal-ump decided had grazed the inside of the post. Wouldn’t have dislodged the bails.

Fox Footy Channel To Close

Future of Cable and Satellite Coverage in Australia Unclear (updated)

by Rob de Santos and Johnson Leung, reporting for AFANA

In a press release issued today (23 August 2006), Foxtel announced that at the end of this AFL season, the Fox Footy Channel (FFC) would cease operations.  The closure was blamed on "The positions taken by Seven and Ten and the delays and uncertainty over the future" leaving "FOXTEL with no option but to close its dedicated AFL FOX Footy Channel at the end of this season."  The apparent breakdown in negotiations between Foxtel and the Seven and Ten Networks leaves the future of pay television coverage in Australia in doubt.

There is no immediate impact to viewers in North America as whatever networks

Demons and Dogs To Canberra

by Lisa reporting for AFANA from Chicago

AFL Canberra Deal
Manuka Oval, abandoned by the Kangaroos, will see AFL football next year with Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs agreeing to play one home game each for the next 3 years. A total of 4 games will be scheduled at Manuka, with a preseason NAB Cup game and one practice game to make up the other 2 matches. The Sydney Swans will be involved in at least one of these games as the away team.

In making the announcement AFL Chief Operating Officer Ben Buckley praised the Bulldogs and Melbourne for their support in helping to retain an AFL presence in Canberra. The Bulldogs have been playing one home game per year against Sydney at the SCG,

New Radio Deal with ABC Imminent

Report by Johnson Leung for AFANA in Melbourne

Stations Inundated with Listener Support

The AFL has assured the Australian Broadcasting Corporation it will continue to cover football on radio for the next three years, following a public outcry over moves to relegate the government-funded broadcaster to coverage of inferior games.  (Ed. note:  the international shortwave coverage of Aussie rules on Radio Australia is taken from ABC's Melbourne coverage so this development is very important to overseas fans.)

Bulldogs Do It For Victoria

By Barry Kennedy, AFANA Reporter in Melbourne

In the wake of slip ups by Collingwood and the Western Bulldogs last round, the big talk in Melbourne this week was the possibility of interstate clubs filling the top four positions at the end of the year. This has been interpreted as further proof of a permanent shift in the balance of power in AFL football to the north and west of Melbourne. If that was the case, the Bulldogs, returning from heat of Darwin, (itself the longest road trip on the AFL itinerary) and with only 24 players available for selection, should have been easy meat for the rebounding Crows.

AFL Weekly Preview Round 20 2006

Last Week: 4 from 8 – Total 98/152 (64.5%)

Miserable tipping last week and it only goes to show that there are still opportunities to make up points on tipping competition leaders if you can work out just who the hell will win on the day. Comp averages around the nation state about 4 – 5 points scored by most tipsters apart from those that enter big competitions under 23 different names and therefore submit 23 different possibilities. With three rounds to go the opportunities to cover yourself in tipping glory are fast diminishing as are places in the final 8. In fact, what looked like it might be an interesting end to the season with a number of teams vying for a finals spot has all but ended with those teams currently ensconced in the 8 probably being the finals contenders. Mind you, just where in the 8 the teams from

AFL Weekly Review Round 19 2006

AFL Round 19

by Tim Murphy

Ah, been celebrating the big win.

At the MCG:

Essendon     5.2   7.6   7.10   10.14.74
Collingwood  2.0   4.2   6.4      9.7.61

Wins for the Dons are like Liberals with a conscience. None for ages, then several appearing at once. The Magpoise were seen to have a very easy final month but blew the first leg and maybe a top-four slot. The bottom-dwelling Bummers were more committed. Sloppy and very ordinary, the Maggies. Especially up front. More tabloid drama for the Poise last week as Mick Malthouse denied stories a medical condition would force him into retirement at the end of this season. Mick did confirm he had a condition though, which was something (didn’t say what it was. Short man syndrome?). Three changes to the Don team from last week,

Tigers Cubs Maul Sleepy Lions

By Barry Kennedy, AFANA Reporter in Melbourne

Since draft and salary cap equalization began leveling up the competition ten years ago, clubs have adopted a youth first approach. Rebuilding sides invariably pack their teams with young players and Richmond and Brisbane are very much in that category. Young teams are often inconsistent however and so it proved this night for Brisbane. Richmond had the game sealed well before half time. Only time will tell how good the new batch of Richmond talent will be. Unfortunately for Brisbane with premiership heroes bowing out almost by the month,
