AFL Weekly Review Round 21 2006

AFL Round 21

Last week pay TV operator Foxtel announced their AFL-dedicated channel Fox Footy would be closing at the end of the current season, after Foxtel failed to negotiate a deal with the new free-to-air TV rights holders from 2007, Channels Seven and Ten. The consequences for the viewer vary according to your location but for yours truly and anyone else living in NSW, ACT, Queensland or the NT, they could be terrible. Currently, without Fox Footy we’d see a maximum three games a weekend (sometimes one), unless you’re prepared to sit up into the small hours for a replay,

Freo School Big Brother For Top 4 Spot

Freo Win Biggest Derby Of All

by Tim Stone, reporting for the AFANA @ Subiaco Oval, Perth.

Before the bouncedown of the Round 21 derby between West Coast and Fremantle, the Dockers were the younger colt in a 2 horse town. As the final sounded, Fremantle had not only earned the respect of West Coast, but the attention of the entire AFL community.

Fremantle humbled the top of the table and Premiership favourites in West Coast by an astonishing 57 points only one game away from finals, and in doing so has broken all kinds of club and derby records.

Turf Experiments for Dome

by Lisa reporting for AFANA from Chicago

New Plan For Telstra Dome
The AFL, Telstra Dome management, and its turf supplier have been working together for the past 2 years on a new plan to improve the playing surface at the Telstra Dome. Experiments with new turf have been conducted in secret at Essendon's training ground Windy Hill. The controversial Telstra Dome playing surface could be replaced as early as the end of this season.

It is believed that Telstra Dome manager Ian Collins, who has traveled extensively to Europe and the USA to learn about turf management, will soon head to Germany to look at stadia used during the recent World Cup Soccer games.

Lions Tamed But Swans Need to Improve

By Frank Ienco, reporting for AFANA from Sydney

Even late in the season, with finals beckoning and sides fighting for positions, there are some games that fans and experts alike question why they even take place. With the Brisbane Lions decimated by injuries and looking ahead to 2007, they were considered by many to be pushovers for a Sydney Swans side on their march towards an all-important Top Four position.

Brisbane came to Telstra Stadium with 12 players on their injury list, including key position players Jonathon Brown,

Gehrig Demolishes Bulldogs

By Barry Kennedy, AFANA Reporter in Melbourne

Having conquered the heavyweight Adelaide Crows last week, the Bulldogs were tipped to derail the Saints back from a bad night in Perth last round. But on Friday it was St Kilda that showed that when they're 'on,' they are as electrifying as any AFL outfit. With a package featuring stylish midfielders, bold backline runners and big angry forwards, St Kilda offered a complete performance on Friday not unlike its team of 2004 that served up 14 straight wins.

St Kilda and Western Bulldogs are co-tenants of Telstra Dome. Both sides have led a merry dance over visitors to the ground this year, the Bulldogs with their carry and skill level, St Kilda

AFL Weekly Preview Round 21 2006

AFL Preview Round 20 Season 2006

Last Week: 5 from 8 – Total 103/160 (64.4%)

Tipping last week, I admit, was tinged with a bit of panic when I committed the Hawks and the Bombers to a draw which at half time looked like it was going to be a 15 goal flogging but ended up just an 18 point win to Hawthorn. Had I stuck with the Hawks, whom I really thought would win, I would have managed 6 correct and gained one valuable point on the competition leader. With two rounds to go and 6 points in arrears (in our comp) there is little hope to win so I will concentrate on that second place. How did the rest of you go? There are a few jackpots in some of the tipping comps and there are some last place prizes. Hope you can score something to salvage the season. It looks like my best season of 125 correct will not be topped this year.

AFL Weekly Review Round 20 2006

AFL Round 20

At Football Park:

Port Adelaide  3.4    9.6    12.8    12.15.87

Collingwood    6.5   10.10   10.13   12.17.89

Exciting game, Pie Alan Didak slotting a major with 20 seconds to go to put Collywood ahead. Thus the Poise confirmed finals participation, missing out was a mathematical if not realistic possibility going in. Beforehand Power coach Mark Williams had claimed indifference to the result, even breaking a taboo by suggesting a loss would be preferable from a draft perspective. Typical ‘Choco’ bullpoo, the depleted Pooer tried hard. Flower fans will wonder about a last-quarter Danyle Pearce shot which the goal-ump decided had grazed the inside of the post. Wouldn’t have dislodged the bails.

Fox Footy Channel To Close

Future of Cable and Satellite Coverage in Australia Unclear (updated)

by Rob de Santos and Johnson Leung, reporting for AFANA

In a press release issued today (23 August 2006), Foxtel announced that at the end of this AFL season, the Fox Footy Channel (FFC) would cease operations.  The closure was blamed on "The positions taken by Seven and Ten and the delays and uncertainty over the future" leaving "FOXTEL with no option but to close its dedicated AFL FOX Footy Channel at the end of this season."  The apparent breakdown in negotiations between Foxtel and the Seven and Ten Networks leaves the future of pay television coverage in Australia in doubt.

There is no immediate impact to viewers in North America as whatever networks

Demons and Dogs To Canberra

by Lisa reporting for AFANA from Chicago

AFL Canberra Deal
Manuka Oval, abandoned by the Kangaroos, will see AFL football next year with Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs agreeing to play one home game each for the next 3 years. A total of 4 games will be scheduled at Manuka, with a preseason NAB Cup game and one practice game to make up the other 2 matches. The Sydney Swans will be involved in at least one of these games as the away team.

In making the announcement AFL Chief Operating Officer Ben Buckley praised the Bulldogs and Melbourne for their support in helping to retain an AFL presence in Canberra. The Bulldogs have been playing one home game per year against Sydney at the SCG,

New Radio Deal with ABC Imminent

Report by Johnson Leung for AFANA in Melbourne

Stations Inundated with Listener Support

The AFL has assured the Australian Broadcasting Corporation it will continue to cover football on radio for the next three years, following a public outcry over moves to relegate the government-funded broadcaster to coverage of inferior games.  (Ed. note:  the international shortwave coverage of Aussie rules on Radio Australia is taken from ABC's Melbourne coverage so this development is very important to overseas fans.)
